Description

Systematic position of the spruce bark moth (Cydia pactolana) places it within the order Lepidoptera, family Tortricidae. This insect is a cryptic pest, meaning it spends the majority of its larval stage hidden under the bark of coniferous trees, which makes effective surveillance and management quite challenging.

Host plants are primarily restricted to the Norway spruce (Picea abies). The pest typically targets younger trees or the lower portions of larger spruce trunks, preferring areas where the bark is relatively thin and provides adequate nutritional resources for the developing larvae.

Biology and life cycle usually consist of one generation per year. Adult moths typically emerge in late spring or early summer to mate. Females lay their eggs directly onto the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the inner bark and cambium layers, where they feed throughout their development period, undermining the tree's vascular system.

Damage and economic significance are characterized by winding larval galleries filled with frass, which disrupts nutrient transport. Heavy infestations often result in visible resin flow, yellowing of needles, dieback of branches, and in severe cases, the death of young spruce trees. This leads to both aesthetic damage in plantations and economic losses in forestry.

Protection measures primarily focus on silvicultural practices to prevent population outbreaks. Maintaining healthy, vigorous forest stands is crucial to reduce susceptibility. Key strategies include the prompt removal of heavily infested trees during sanitation thinning and, in nurseries or high-value landscapes, the targeted application of insecticides during the moth flight period to prevent new egg-laying.
