Description

The spruce seed moth (Cydia strobilella) is a member of the Tortricidae family. This moth is a specialized pest that targets the cones of spruce trees, making it a major concern for forestry managers and seed orchard technicians who rely on high-quality seed production for reforestation.

The insect primarily infests the female cones of various spruce species. The damage caused by the larvae is focused on the internal structure of the cone, where they feed on the scales and, most importantly, the developing seeds. This feeding pattern prevents the healthy maturation of the seeds and often leads to the destruction of the entire cone interior.

Regarding its life cycle, Cydia strobilella is univoltine, meaning it produces one generation per year. The adult moths emerge in early spring, coinciding with the flowering of the spruce trees. Females lay their eggs on the cone scales, and the newly hatched larvae bore into the cone, where they complete their development before overwintering as pupae or mature larvae inside the cone.

The impact of this pest is significant in commercial seed stands, where it can cause heavy losses, sometimes reaching nearly 100% of the seed crop. The physical damage to the cones makes them susceptible to secondary infections by fungi, leading to further degradation of the reproductive potential of the stand.

Effective management and control measures include:

  • Monitoring of adult populations using pheromone traps to time chemical treatments.
  • Application of targeted insecticides during the larval hatching period.
  • Harvesting and destroying infested cones before the next generation of moths emerges.
  • Promoting silvicultural practices that maintain stand health and improve resistance to pest outbreaks.
