Larch shoot moth

Cydia zebeana

Description

The Larch shoot moth (Cydia zebeana) is a destructive forest pest belonging to the Tortricidae family. This moth specifically targets larch trees (Larix spp.), causing significant damage to the shoots and overall health of the tree, which is a major concern for both commercial timber plantations and ornamental forestry.

The biological cycle of this pest is typically univoltine, meaning one generation per year. The larvae overwinter within silken cocoons hidden inside deep cracks of the bark or under protective scales of the tree's trunk. As spring temperatures rise and the larch trees begin their seasonal growth, the larvae emerge to bore into the developing new shoots.

Damage is characterized by the formation of galls — abnormal swellings on the branches where the larvae feed. These larval tunnels disrupt the transport of nutrients and water, often causing the shoots to curl, wither, or die back completely. This not only stunts the tree's vertical growth but also leads to permanent structural deformities in the crown.

The economic impact of Cydia zebeana is most severe in young larch plantations. Heavy infestations can lead to a drastic reduction in biomass production, increased susceptibility to secondary infections, and, in severe cases, the complete loss of young trees. Preventing widespread outbreaks is crucial for maintaining the productivity of larch stands.

Control measures rely heavily on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Key strategies include the manual removal and destruction of infested branches before larvae pupate, as well as the use of systemic insecticides during critical windows of larval emergence. Monitoring population density with pheromone traps is recommended to determine the optimal timing for intervention.

  • Prompt removal of galled shoots during the winter or early spring
  • Biological control using predators and parasitic wasps
  • Application of selective insecticides at the larval hatching stage
  • Promoting forest diversity to limit the spread of outbreaks
