Cylindronotus

Cylindronotus is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Tenebrionidae (darkling beetles), order Coleoptera. These insects are typically soil-dwelling organisms that, under specific environmental conditions, shift their feeding habits to include vegetative parts of cultivated plants, causing significant economic losses in the agricultural sector.

This pest attacks a wide range of agricultural crops. The most frequent damage from both adults and larvae is observed in vegetable crops, cereal fields, and young nursery saplings. Harmful activity manifests as the severing of root necks, damage to young shoots, and foliage consumption, all of which contribute to plant stunting and eventual mortality.

The biology of the insect is closely linked to soil health and moisture levels. The development cycle includes egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adult beetles are primarily nocturnal, hiding during the day in the topsoil layers or under plant debris. Larvae develop underground, feeding on organic matter and subterranean plant parts, which makes early detection of an infestation quite challenging.

The nature of the damage varies depending on the crop growth stage. In the spring, the pest inflicts critical damage on seedlings by destroying growth points, leading to thin and uneven crop stands. High population densities can result in total crop failure in affected fields, especially during drought years when insects become more active in their search for moisture contained within plant tissues.
