Description
Ommatoiulus belongs to the class Diplopoda and the family Julidae. While often considered soil-dwellers that decompose organic matter, certain species within this genus act as significant agricultural pests, particularly in moist environments and intensive crop production systems.
This pest affects a wide range of crops, including cereals, sugar beets, potatoes, strawberries, and various greenhouse vegetables. They are particularly destructive during the early stages of plant development, targeting germinating seeds and young seedlings that have not yet established a robust root system.
The biology of Ommatoiulus is strictly linked to moisture levels and soil organic content. These millipedes thrive in high-humidity conditions and often aggregate in soils rich in undecomposed organic matter. They reproduce by laying eggs in protected soil chambers, where larvae hatch and undergo several stages of molting.
Damage caused by Ommatoiulus is characterized by surface scarring on roots and tubers, as well as the hollowing out of seeds. By creating entry wounds, they facilitate the development of secondary infections caused by fungi and bacteria, leading to rot and rapid crop decline, often resulting in significant yield gaps.
Effective management requires a combination of strategies. Agronomic practices like deep plowing, appropriate crop rotation, and managing irrigation to avoid waterlogging are essential. In cases of severe infestations, the application of specialized soil insecticides or seed treatments containing appropriate active ingredients is recommended.
