The species primarily affects crops grown in water-based systems, such as leafy greens, herbs, and water-cress. The fish tend to feed on young shoots and bite into the root zone, causing mechanical damage that disrupts the nutrient uptake process of the plants and often leads to the stunted growth or death of the crops.

The biology of the goldfish is characterized by high adaptability and an opportunistic omnivorous diet.
