Description

Cyrtopeltis crassicornis, commonly referred to as the tomato bug, is a member of the Miridae family within the order Hemiptera. This pest is specifically adapted to feed on solanaceous crops and is recognized as a significant threat in both protected and open-field cultivation systems.

The primary host plant for this insect is the tomato. However, it also extensively damages other important crops such as eggplant, bell pepper, and potato. Furthermore, wild solanaceous weeds serve as essential alternative hosts, allowing the pest to survive and persist throughout the season.

The biological development of this bug is highly dependent on ambient temperatures. Females deposit eggs into the soft tissues of stalks and leaf petioles. The nymphs undergo multiple developmental stages, during which they feed voraciously on plant fluids, weakening the host plant significantly.

Damage to crops is characterized by the appearance of small necrotic lesions at the puncture sites. Heavy infestations cause yellowing and premature leaf senescence, stunt plant growth, and lead to flower and fruit drop, which causes substantial economic losses for producers.

Integrated pest management (IPM) for this species involves several critical components:

  • Rigorous sanitation to eliminate weed reservoirs surrounding production areas.
  • Deployment of yellow sticky traps to track population density and timing of emergence.
