Description
Systematic position: Dacus ferrugineus is a species belonging to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae (fruit flies). It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that causes substantial economic losses in various horticultural sectors globally.
Host plants: This pest primarily infests a wide range of tropical and subtropical fruits. Preferred hosts include mango, citrus species, guava, papaya, and various stone fruits, making it a critical concern for fruit producers in endemic regions.
Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva (three instars), pupa, and adult. The female uses her ovipositor to insert eggs into maturing fruit. Larvae develop rapidly inside the fruit, thriving in the nutrient-rich pulp before exiting to pupate in the soil.
Damage and severity: The primary damage is caused by larvae feeding on the internal tissues of the fruit. This feeding activity leads to internal decay, discoloration, and premature fruit drop. In addition to direct tissue damage, the entry points often facilitate secondary bacterial and fungal infections.
Control measures: Effective management involves a combination of strategies:
- Monitoring populations with pheromone-based traps.
- Sanitation, including the collection and deep burial of infested fruit.
- Targeted application of bait sprays containing protein hydrolysates.
- Strict quarantine regulations to prevent the spread of the pest to new regions.
