Description

Dacus pullescens is a species of dipteran insects belonging to the Tephritidae family (fruit flies), part of the genus Dacus. This pest is of significant concern in horticulture as it targets maturing fruits, often causing heavy yield losses in affected plantations.

The host range of this fruit fly is relatively broad, primarily focusing on fleshy fruits. Key crops prone to infestation include members of the Cucurbitaceae and Solanaceae families, as well as various fruit trees in tropical and subtropical regions where the species is established.

The life cycle involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females utilize a specialized ovipositor to insert eggs beneath the skin of the host fruit. Once hatched, the larvae feed on the fruit pulp, creating extensive tunnels that structurally compromise the fruit and create entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal infections.

Typical signs of damage include discoloration on the fruit surface at the site of the oviposition puncture and premature fruit drop. As the larvae grow, the internal tissues liquefy, rendering the fruit completely unmarketable and accelerating the decay process throughout the crop canopy.
