Dalopius click beetle

Dalopius is a genus of beetles belonging to the Elateridae family within the order Coleoptera. In agronomic practice, members of this genus are primarily recognized during their larval stage, commonly known as wireworms. These insects are widely distributed in temperate latitudes and can cause significant damage when population levels are high within the soil profile.

The pest affects a wide range of agricultural crops. It is particularly dangerous to cereal crops, corn, sunflowers, potatoes, and various vegetables. The larvae feed on the subterranean organs of plants: they consume seeds, damage root systems, and tunnel into stems, which ultimately leads to the weakening and death of young seedlings.

The biology of Dalopius click beetles is characterized by a prolonged life cycle that can span several years. Adult beetles are active during the spring and summer months, after which they lay eggs in soil rich in organic matter or near the root zones of weeds. The hatched larvae (wireworms) inhabit the upper soil layers, moving vertically based on fluctuations in soil moisture and temperature.

Damage occurs as wireworms sever roots or bore tunnels into the base of the stems, causing plants to yellow, wilt, and eventually die off. The damage is most severe during years with moderate moisture when larvae are most active in the root zone. Infested fields often suffer from reduced plant density, leading to significant yield losses and lower quality of agricultural produce.
