Description
Systematic position. Dalotia coriaria (formerly Atheta coriaria) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Staphylinidae, commonly known as rove beetles. This species is a well-known inhabitant of moist substrates in greenhouse environments, where it acts as both a predator and, under certain conditions, a plant pest.
Target crops. Dalotia poses a significant risk to a wide variety of greenhouse-grown crops. It is particularly destructive in nurseries and ornamental plant production, as well as in vegetable starter cultures, where it thrives in rich potting media and humid conditions.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Dalotia coriaria occurs within the soil or growth media. It progresses through egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The beetles are highly mobile and reproduce rapidly, favoring environments with high organic content and constant moisture, which are typical for professional greenhouse operations.
Nature of damage and harmfulness. While often considered generalist predators, these beetles can become pests when their population density peaks. The larvae cause direct damage by feeding on delicate root hairs and young roots, which compromises the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients and provides entry points for root pathogens.
Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Dalotia. Key strategies include moisture management in the substrate and the use of biological control agents such as predatory mites and entomopathogenic nematodes. Maintaining good greenhouse hygiene and ensuring proper substrate drainage are the most effective preventive steps.
