Description
Dalotia coriaria, commonly known as a type of rove beetle, has become a significant concern in greenhouse horticulture. While it was once considered a beneficial predator that feeds on fungus gnat larvae, it is now recognized as a potential pest that can cause direct damage to plant roots and stems when populations reach high densities.
Taxonomically, the species belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Staphylinidae. These beetles are relatively small, measuring approximately 3 to 4 millimeters in length, with dark, elongated bodies. Their life cycle is soil-bound, making it difficult for growers to monitor their presence until damage to the crop becomes visible to the naked eye.
The beetle thrives in environments with high moisture levels and organic substrates, frequently infesting potted plants, nursery seedlings, and various greenhouse crops like peppers, cucumbers, and ornamental flowers. They prefer dark, humid zones where they can easily move through the top layers of the growing medium to find food sources.
Damage occurs primarily when the beetle feeds on delicate root hairs and the basal portion of the stem. This feeding activity disrupts the plant's ability to uptake water and essential nutrients, leading to stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and potentially plant collapse. Because they move rapidly through the soil, a single colony can spread across a greenhouse bench in a short period.
