Description
The genus Damalinia refers to biting lice (chewing lice) within the order Phthiraptera. Unlike blood-feeding sucking lice, these ectoparasites possess strong mandibles adapted for grazing on skin debris, hair, and epidermal secretions of their hosts. They are permanent parasites, spending their entire life cycle on the animal body.
These pests primarily affect livestock, including cattle, sheep, goats, and horses. Their presence is usually detected in areas where the animal cannot easily groom itself, such as the top line, the root of the tail, and the neck region, where the hair coat provides a suitable environment for population growth.
The biology of Damalinia involves a direct life cycle. Females attach their eggs (nits) firmly to the hair shafts near the skin. The nymphs that hatch undergo several molts before reaching maturity. Because these insects are host-specific and cannot survive for long off the host animal, transmission occurs primarily through direct animal-to-animal contact or shared grooming equipment.
Damage caused by these lice leads to severe pruritus (itching). Affected animals often rub against fences and walls, causing skin abrasions, hair loss, and scabbing. This infestation negatively impacts agricultural productivity, causing reduced weight gain, decreased milk production, and damaged hides, which lead to significant economic losses in the livestock industry.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to break the infestation cycle. Recommended control measures include:
- Application of veterinary-approved insecticides, such as pour-ons, sprays, or dusts containing pyrethroids or macrocyclic lactones.
- Cleaning and disinfecting livestock housing and grooming tools to eliminate eggs and nymphs.
- Implementing strict quarantine protocols for new livestock additions to ensure they are parasite-free.
- Routine monitoring of the herd to catch infestations early, especially before housing animals for winter.
