The Sheep Biting Louse (Damalinia ovis) is a small, wingless insect belonging to the order Mallophaga and the family Trichodectidae. Unlike sucking lice, this species possesses biting mouthparts adapted for feeding on skin debris, dander, and sebaceous secretions from the sheep's wool. It is a highly host-specific parasite, spending its entire life cycle on the sheep.

These pests primarily affect sheep flocks worldwide, causing significant economic losses in the wool industry. The lice prefer warm, humid areas of the body, specifically the back, sides, and shoulders, where the wool density provides both protection and a stable environment for egg-laying and development.

The life cycle of Damalinia ovis consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages, occurring entirely on the host animal. The female glues eggs onto the wool fibers. After hatching, the nymphs undergo several molts before reaching maturity, a process that takes approximately 30 to 40 days. Sheep respond by rubbing, biting, and scratching against fences and troughs, which results in significant wool breakage, matting, and loss of commercial value. Chronic infestations lead to raw skin patches, increased susceptibility to secondary infections, and a general decline in the animal's nutritional status and productivity.
