Dasypsyllus gallinulae, commonly referred to as a bird flea, is a specialized ectoparasite that primarily infests the nests of various bird species. Taxonomically, this species is classified within the order Siphonaptera and the family Ceratophyllidae. While it does not feed on plant tissue, its presence in farming environments creates significant challenges for poultry producers and animal husbandry operations.

The life cycle of this parasite is highly adapted to the nesting habits of its hosts. Female fleas deposit eggs within the nest debris, where larvae consume organic detritus and dried blood from the hosts. The pupal stage is protected by a sturdy cocoon, allowing the insect to remain dormant until the warmth and vibrations of a bird host trigger the emergence of the adult flea.

The economic impact of this pest manifests primarily through reduced poultry health and lowered production rates. Infested birds exhibit signs of stress, excessive scratching, and restlessness, which negatively affect weight gain and egg production. Furthermore, the constant irritation to the skin can cause secondary bacterial infections, complicating the overall health management of the flock.

In an agricultural context, bird fleas often enter facilities via contaminated straw, hay, or other bedding materials that have been in contact with infested nests. Although they do not cause direct damage to cultivated crops, the risk of infestation in storage areas where animal bedding is kept necessitates strict hygiene protocols to prevent the establishment of the parasite within the facility.
