The yellow-necked caterpillar (Datana ministra) is a moth species belonging to the Notodontidae family. It is a well-known defoliator that often infests deciduous trees and shrubs throughout North America, frequently noticed by gardeners due to the social behavior of its larvae.
This pest has a wide range of host plants, preferring fruit trees such as apple, pear, cherry, and quince. It is also commonly found on shade trees including oak, maple, linden, and walnut. The larvae are notorious for their ability to defoliate entire branches in a short period.
The life cycle involves a single generation per year. Female moths lay clusters of eggs on the underside of leaves. Once hatched, the larvae feed gregariously. As they mature, their appetite increases significantly before they descend into the soil to pupate and overwinter in the larval stage.
The damage caused by Datana ministra is distinct: early instars skeletonize the foliage, while older larvae consume the entire leaf, leaving only the veins or midribs. A single colony can cause significant aesthetic and physiological damage to a tree by stripping it bare.
Effective management strategies include manual removal of the caterpillar clusters when they are small and localized. For larger infestations, applications of biological insecticides like Bacillus thuringiensis or conventional systemic insecticides are effective. Maintaining tree health through proper fertilization and cultivation helps plants withstand defoliation.
