Description
The fig moth (Davara caricae) is a significant pest belonging to the Pyralidae family in the order Lepidoptera. It primarily targets fig trees (Ficus carica), posing a substantial threat to both commercial orchards and small-scale domestic cultivation.
The damage is caused by the larval stage of the moth. Larvae penetrate the developing fruit, feeding on the inner flesh and seeds. This feeding behavior not only destroys the fruit interior but also creates entry points for secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria, leading to rot.
Regarding its biology, Davara caricae completes multiple generations during the growing season depending on temperature conditions. The adult moths lay eggs on the surface of the fruit. Upon hatching, the larvae quickly bore into the fruit to feed, making them difficult to control once they are established inside.
The presence of the pest is indicated by excrement accumulations near the fruit's ostiole (eye) and premature fruit drop. Growers often notice infested fruit turning yellow or brownish prematurely, signaling the need for immediate intervention to prevent further spread throughout the tree canopy.
Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical control. Key strategies include:
