Description
The soybean stem borer (Dectes texanus) belongs to the family Cerambycidae (longhorned beetles) within the order Coleoptera. This insect is a significant pest of soybean production, known for its cryptic life cycle that makes conventional insecticide applications largely ineffective during the larval stage.
While soybeans are the primary agricultural host, the beetle also utilizes various weeds as alternative hosts, most notably wild sunflower and ragweed. These plants play a critical role in the pest’s ecology, acting as a refuge that allows the population to persist in areas where soybeans are not grown every single year.
The biological cycle of the Dectes texanus is univoltine, meaning one generation per year. Adults emerge in mid-summer, mate, and deposit eggs into the leaf petioles or the upper stems of the soybean plant. Once hatched, the larvae tunnel into the pith of the stem, feeding as they gradually work their way down to the base of the plant to overwinter.
The damage caused by the larvae is twofold: physiological stress during the growing season and structural damage at harvest. As the larvae tunnel through the pith, they disrupt nutrient flow, but their most destructive behavior occurs in late summer when they girdle the inside of the stem at the base. This girdling causes the plants to lodge, making mechanical harvesting difficult and causing yield losses.
Management of the soybean stem borer requires an integrated approach rather than reliance on pesticides. Key strategies include practicing crop rotation with non-host crops like corn, deep tillage to destroy the stubble where larvae overwinter, and aggressive weed management in and around the fields to eliminate alternative hosts. Planting varieties with earlier maturity dates may also allow for harvest before significant lodging occurs.
