Demodex is a genus of microscopic mites belonging to the order Trombidiformes and the family Demodicidae. From a strictly agronomical and biological standpoint, it is crucial to note that Demodex species are obligate parasites of mammals, living within hair follicles and sebaceous glands. They are not direct agricultural pests of plants, yet the name is frequently used in field reports when misidentifying various species of plant-inhabiting gall mites that cause surface deformities.

In cases where crops exhibit symptoms of mite infestation, the term Demodex is often erroneously attributed to the damage caused by Eriophyid mites. These plant parasites are responsible for creating galls, erinea (hair-like outgrowths), and tissue curling. Because both groups are microscopic and difficult to identify without specialized laboratory equipment, farmers often struggle with correct pest management strategies when they misidentify the pathogen.

The biology of true Demodex involves a life cycle exclusively tied to mammalian hosts, comprising egg, larva, protonymph, and adult stages. In contrast, plant-parasitic mites have complex life cycles involving hibernation in buds or bark, followed by rapid reproduction on the leaf surfaces during the growing season. Understanding this distinction is vital for applying the correct management tactics for horticultural and field crops.
