They are not direct agricultural pests of plants, yet the name is frequently used in field reports when misidentifying various species of plant-inhabiting gall mites that cause surface deformities.

In cases where crops exhibit symptoms of mite infestation, the term Demodex is often erroneously attributed to the damage caused by Eriophyid mites. These plant parasites are responsible for creating galls, erinea (hair-like outgrowths), and tissue curling. Because both groups are microscopic and difficult to identify without specialized laboratory equipment, farmers often struggle with correct pest management strategies when they misidentify the pathogen.

The biology of true Demodex involves a life cycle exclusively tied to mammalian hosts, comprising egg, larva, protonymph, and adult stages.
