The Hamster follicle mite (Demodex criceti) is a species of the Demodicidae family within the Trombidiformes order. While primarily recognized as a specialized endoparasite of hamsters, its relevance in agronomy stems from its association with rodents that pose a direct threat to agricultural crops. Understanding this mite is critical for integrated pest management (IPM) strategies that consider the broader biological health of field ecosystems.

The mite possesses a highly specialized vermiform body, an adaptation for dwelling within the hair follicles and sebaceous glands of its host. In an agricultural context, this species does not consume plant matter. However, its presence serves as an indicator of rodent activity within or near crop fields, which can lead to significant mechanical damage to seedlings, roots, and stored grain products.

The life cycle of Demodex criceti involves egg, larva, protonymph, nymph, and adult stages, occurring entirely within the host's skin. The parasite feeds on epithelial cells and sebum. Though these mites do not colonize plants, they remain viable for short periods when dislodged.
