These small wasps are widely recognized in agricultural entomology as hyperparasitoids. This means they do not feed on plant tissues but instead parasitize other insects that are already acting as natural enemies of primary agricultural pests.

Affected crops. While they do not cause direct mechanical damage to plants, their presence is closely associated with various crops, including cereals, vegetables, and orchard fruits. They primarily inhabit environments where aphids are abundant, as these habitats support the larvae and pupae of the primary parasitoids that Dendrocerus targets.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Dendrocerus involves locating an aphid mummy or a host pupa where a primary parasitoid is developing. The female wasp inserts an egg into the host, and the resulting larva consumes the primary parasitoid. This biological process can occur rapidly, often resulting in several generations per season, depending on the environmental conditions and host availability.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. The primary concern with Dendrocerus in agriculture is the disruption of biological control programs. By attacking and killing beneficial primary parasitoids, they effectively negate the work of these natural biocontrol agents. This leads to a higher survival rate for primary plant pests like aphids, which can then cause significant damage to crop yields.

Control measures. Managing Dendrocerus requires a balanced approach within an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system:
