Description
Systematic position: The caraway moth (Depressaria conterminella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Depressariidae. It is a specialized pest known to inhabit and damage plants primarily within the Apiaceae (umbelliferous) family.
Host crops: The primary host of economic importance is caraway (Carum carvi). However, the pest is also capable of feeding on other related crops such as dill and carrots, as well as various wild umbellifers, which can serve as a reservoir for the population.
Biology and life cycle: The insect overwinters in the adult stage, seeking shelter in plant debris, under bark, or in protected structures. In the spring, when the host plants begin to bloom, the moths emerge to lay eggs on the flower stalks or leaves. The larvae go through several instars before pupating either in the soil or within the damaged plant material.
Damage and harmfulness: The larvae cause the most significant damage. They spin silk webs around the umbels (flower heads), creating nests where they feed voraciously on flower buds, developing seeds, and petals. This activity destroys the reproductive parts of the plant, often leading to a near-total loss of the seed crop if the infestation is severe.
Management measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential. Recommended strategies include:
- Deep autumn plowing to bury pupae.
- Removal of wild host plants near fields.
- Monitoring of flight activity using pheromone traps.
- Application of selective insecticides during the budding stage if thresholds are exceeded.
