Description

The Parsnip moth (Depressaria nervosa) is a moth species belonging to the family Depressariidae. While the name suggests it primarily affects parsnips, this pest is a significant threat to a wide range of Apiaceae (umbelliferous) crops, including fennel, dill, coriander, and caraway, causing severe economic damage in agricultural settings.

The larvae are the primary damaging stage. Upon hatching, they migrate to the flowering heads of the host plants. They construct silken webs that bind the flower heads together, creating a protected environment where they feed voraciously on buds, flowers, and developing seeds, effectively ruining the reproductive potential of the crop.

The life cycle involves overwintering as adults (imagines) in protected spots such as leaf litter, bark crevices, or field debris. In early spring, the adults emerge to mate and lay eggs on the leaves and stalks of host plants. The larvae undergo several instars, with the most damage occurring during the flowering stage of the plant.

In terms of economic impact, an infestation can lead to a total loss of seed yield in heavily affected areas. Besides direct consumption of reproductive organs, the webbing causes the plant structures to wither and die, which complicates harvesting and negatively affects the quality and viability of the remaining seed harvest.

Control strategies for Depressaria nervosa focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Key measures include:

  • Removal of crop residues after harvest to destroy overwintering sites.
  • Application of selective insecticides at the early larval stages before web formation.
  • Monitoring of field edges and wild umbelliferous weeds that host the pest.
  • Rotation with non-host crops to break the life cycle of the moth.
