European house dust mite

Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus is a microscopic arachnid belonging to the family Pyroglyphidae, order Sarcoptiformes. In an agricultural context, it is recognized as a significant stored-product pest that thrives in environments where grain dust, organic debris, and plant-based residues accumulate. It frequently infests warehouses, mills, and grain silos where sanitation standards are compromised.

The mite affects a variety of stored agricultural commodities, including cereals, legumes, and dried plant materials. As a saprophage, it consumes mold spores, human/animal skin flakes, and fine plant debris. Its impact is predominantly related to the degradation of commodity purity and the creation of unhygienic conditions that facilitate the growth of secondary storage pests and pathogenic fungi.

The biological development of this species is highly sensitive to abiotic factors. The life cycle comprises an egg, larva, two nymphal stages, and an adult. Under optimal conditions of 20–25°C and 70% relative humidity, a generation can be completed in about three to four weeks. High moisture levels in grain mass act as a catalyst for population explosions, making moisture management critical.

Damage caused by Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus is characterized by the accumulation of hazardous waste products. Their presence causes the contamination of stored grains, rendering them unsuitable for food production due to severe allergenic properties. Furthermore, the heat generated by large mite colonies can lead to localized "hot spots" in grain, which further exacerbates the deterioration process.

Management strategies for this mite focus on prevention through structural and environmental control. Key practices include:

• maintaining grain moisture content below 13%;
• frequent cleaning of storage facilities to remove dust buildup;
• proper aeration of storage bins;
• application of approved acaricides or fumigants during professional pest management interventions.
