The mite Euroglyphus maynei is a member of the family Pyroglyphidae, within the order Sarcoptiformes. While it is primarily recognized as a domestic pest, in an agricultural context, it is categorized as a storage pest that inhabits facilities where grains and vegetable products are kept under high humidity.
This mite does not attack living crops in the field. However, it plays a significant role in the degradation of stored products. Its presence is often linked to the accumulation of organic debris, dust, and mold spores within storage infrastructure, which create a suitable environment for the population to thrive.
The life cycle progresses through the stages of egg, larva, protonymph, tritonymph, and adult. Under optimal conditions of 20–25°C and high humidity, the mite can complete its life cycle rapidly, leading to significant outbreaks in stored commodities.
The damage caused by Euroglyphus maynei is mainly due to its feeding habits and the accumulation of fecal pellets. These waste products serve as potent allergens and contaminants that compromise the safety and quality of stored products, rendering them unsuitable for processing or sale if infestation levels are high.
