Beyond these, it is a common nuisance in natural history museums, where it can cause irreversible damage to taxidermy collections and biological specimens by feeding on skin and connective tissues left behind during preparation.

The life cycle of the insect consists of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. The larval stage is the most destructive, characterized by rapid growth and aggressive feeding behavior. They are highly resilient and capable of thriving in environments where food sources are available, often hiding in cracks and crevices in floorboards or storage structures.

The extent of damage is measured by the physical destruction of goods, ranging from irregular holes in hides to the complete pulverization of organic materials. Infested materials become contaminated with shed larval skins and frass, which drastically reduces the market value and utility of the affected goods in international trade.
