Larder beetle

The larder beetle (Dermestes lardarius) is a significant pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Dermestidae. This insect is primarily known for infesting food products and materials of animal origin, making it a major threat to warehouses, homes, and food production facilities.

The species primarily attacks protein-rich items such as cured meats, dried fish, cheese, furs, hides, and taxidermy specimens. While their diet is predominantly animal-based, they can also cause damage to stored grains or plant-based materials if they are contaminated or situated in close proximity to infested animal products.

The biological cycle of the larder beetle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The adult beetles are active fliers, which allows them to migrate between storage areas easily. Females typically lay their eggs near a food source, ensuring that the emerging larvae have immediate access to nourishment upon hatching.

Larval damage is the most severe, as the larvae are highly active and possess strong mouthparts. They tunnel into solid materials, leaving behind holes and structural damage while contaminating the entire batch of products with their frass and cast skins. This makes the infested commodities completely unusable and commercially valueless.
