Asian citrus psyllid

Diaphorina citri

Description

The Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri) is a small sap-sucking insect of the order Hemiptera and the family Liviidae. It is globally recognized as the primary vector for the bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter, which causes Huanglongbing (HLB) or citrus greening disease—a devastating condition that has caused massive losses in the citrus industry worldwide.

This pest affects a wide range of Rutaceae family members, primarily commercial citrus crops such as oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruits. It also thrives on ornamental plants like Murraya paniculata, which often serves as a reservoir for the pest in suburban areas, facilitating its spread into commercial orchards.

The biological cycle of the psyllid is highly adaptive. Adults lay eggs on the tips of developing shoots, ensuring that nymphs have immediate access to succulent tissue. The lifecycle consists of the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. In warm climates, the life cycle can be completed in just a few weeks, leading to overlapping generations throughout the year.

Damage caused by Diaphorina citri is twofold. Direct damage occurs when psyllids feed on the plant, causing curled leaves, stunted shoots, and yellowing. The more severe indirect damage is the transmission of the HLB pathogen, which causes systemic phloem blockage, leading to bitter, misshapen fruits and the eventual death of the citrus tree.

Effective management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key measures include:

  • Regular field monitoring using yellow sticky traps.
  • Strategic chemical control using insecticides during flush growth periods.
  • Biological control through the release of natural enemies like Tamarixia radiata.
  • Sanitation practices, including the removal of infected branches or entire trees.
  • Strict adherence to regional quarantine regulations to prevent the introduction of infested plant material.
