Description

The raspberry gall wasp (lat. Diastrophus rubi) is a member of the Hymenoptera order and the Cynipidae family. This specialized pest focuses its life cycle on raspberry canes, causing distinct structural deformities known as galls.

The primary host for this insect is the raspberry plant. While less common on blackberries, the pest can colonize various species within the Rubus genus. The presence of these insects significantly hampers the development of new canes, often leading to stunted growth and reduced harvest yields.

The biology of the raspberry gall wasp involves a complex interaction with the host plant. Female wasps deposit eggs into the epidermis of young canes. As larvae develop inside, they secrete enzymes that trigger abnormal plant tissue growth, resulting in large, woody galls that house the developing larvae.

Damage is characterized by visible swellings or galls on the canes, which can grow several centimeters in length. These galls weaken the structural integrity of the canes, making them susceptible to snapping under stress, hindering nutrient transport, and potentially leading to the death of the distal parts of the stem.

Effective management requires proactive intervention. Monitoring during the dormant season is critical for early detection. The primary control strategy involves the manual removal and destruction of all galls found on the canes during the autumn or early spring before the adults emerge.
