Diaxenes

Diaxenes is a genus of longhorn beetles belonging to the family Cerambycidae. These insects are recognized as specialized pests that primarily target indoor plants, particularly those kept in greenhouses or private collections of exotic botanical species.

The primary hosts for these beetles are orchids (Orchidaceae). In confined environments, such as conservatories or greenhouses, Diaxenes can cause significant damage to the plant's structural integrity, posing a persistent threat to the health of the collection.

The biology of Diaxenes is characterized by a cryptic lifestyle. Adult beetles are primarily nocturnal, making them difficult to spot during routine daytime inspections. Females typically lay eggs on or within the host tissue, providing the larvae with an immediate food source upon hatching.

Damage is primarily caused by the larvae, which bore through the stems, pseudobulbs, and rhizomes of the orchids. This internal feeding weakens the plant, disrupts nutrient flow, and often leads to the plant's collapse, especially when secondary infections settle into the damaged tissues.
