Dendrobium beetle

The dendrobium beetle (Diaxenes dendrobii) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae (longhorn beetles). This species is specifically known for its tendency to infest orchids, particularly those within the Dendrobium genus, and can cause catastrophic damage to both professional collections and home orchid displays.

The primary hosts of this beetle are species and hybrids of the genus Dendrobium. Although they primarily target these orchids, they have been observed attacking other closely related epiphytes in high-density greenhouse conditions. Because they live inside the plant tissues, they are often difficult to detect until the damage to the plant structure becomes severe.

The lifecycle begins with the adult female laying eggs on the surface of the orchid's pseudobulbs. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the pseudobulb and spend their entire developmental phase feeding on the internal pith. This internal tunneling effectively disrupts the plant's vascular system, preventing the transport of water and nutrients throughout the orchid.

The signs of infestation include small, circular entry holes on the pseudobulbs, often accompanied by the presence of frass (fine, wood-like waste). As the larvae continue to feed, the pseudobulbs become hollowed out, leading to rapid wilting, yellowing of the leaves, and eventually the death of the entire plant section or the whole specimen.

Effective management and control strategies for Diaxenes dendrobii are essential for maintaining healthy plants:

• Implement strict quarantine measures for any new orchid acquisitions to prevent introducing the pest.
• Inspect pseudobulbs regularly for small holes or abnormal softening.
• Prune and destroy severely infested plant parts immediately to stop the larvae's development.
• Utilize systemic insecticides that can be absorbed by the plant to kill larvae feeding internally.
• Maintain optimal environmental conditions to ensure plants are vigorous enough to recover from minor pest pressure.
