Diceroprocta is a genus of insects within the family Cicadidae (cicadas), belonging to the order Hemiptera. These insects are widely recognized in warmer regions for their complex life cycles and the potential damage they can inflict on various woody species. As sap-sucking insects, they have specialized mouthparts designed to pierce plant tissues and extract nutrients.

The range of hosts for Diceroprocta includes various fruit trees, ornamental shrubs, and forest species. The damage is caused by both adults and nymphs. Adults primarily affect the stems and branches of trees during the egg-laying process, while nymphs live underground and feed directly on the plant's root system, which can severely compromise the plant's stability and health.

The life cycle of these insects is notably prolonged, with nymphs spending several years developing in the soil. After the female cuts into the bark to deposit her eggs, the emerging nymphs descend to the soil and begin feeding on roots. They undergo several molting stages underground before finally emerging as adults to mate, completing a cycle that is deeply integrated into the forest or orchard ecosystem.

The harmful impact is manifested through the physical damage to twigs during oviposition, which often causes the branches to wither or snap off. Furthermore, the root feeding by nymphs leads to general tree decline, yellowing of foliage, and reduced vigor. If the population density is high, the cumulative effect of these injuries can lead to significant economic losses in agricultural sectors.
