Description

The Southern pine coneworm (Dioryctria amatella) is a moth species belonging to the Pyralidae family. It is recognized as a significant forest pest that primarily targets various species of pine, causing substantial damage to seed production and tree health.

This pest is most commonly found on pine species, such as loblolly pine, slash pine, and Scots pine. While its larvae primarily target developing cones, they are also known to bore into the twigs, branches, and main stems of young or stressed trees, leading to serious structural issues.

The life cycle of Dioryctria amatella involves egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on the surface of developing cones.
