The cambium moth (Dioryctria cambiicola) is a significant forest pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. This species primarily targets coniferous trees, where its larvae feed on the cambium and phloem layers, causing severe physiological stress to the host plants.
The moth species commonly infests various pine species. By damaging the vascular tissue directly under the bark, the larvae interrupt the transport of water and nutrients, which often leads to the chlorosis of needles, premature needle drop, and in severe infestations, the death of the tree.
The biology of Dioryctria cambiicola involves a complex seasonal cycle. The larvae overwinter under the bark or in protected crevices, resuming activity in the early spring. As they grow, they extend their feeding galleries, which are often marked by resin flow on the trunk surface, making detection possible for foresters.

The open galleries provide easy entry for secondary pathogens, such as fungal infections or bark beetles, which can kill a weakened tree much faster than the moth alone. This synergism makes the cambium moth a critical concern for forest health.
