Description
Systematic position. The pine cone borer (Dioryctria clarioralis) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Pyralidae. It is a specialized pest that focuses its life cycle on the cones of various pine species, impacting forest regeneration efforts significantly.
Host plants. The primary hosts include various species of the Pinus genus. In forest stands and nurseries, this insect targets young, developing cones, making it a serious concern for seed orchards and reforestation programs where high-quality seed production is essential.
Biology and life cycle. Adults emerge during the summer months. Females lay eggs directly on the surface of young cones. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the cone interior to feed on scales and developing seeds. The larvae progress through several instars before either pupating within the cone or moving to the litter layer to overwinter.
Nature of damage. Infestation is characterized by the presence of frass (larval waste) and resin exudation on the exterior of the cones. The damaged cones typically show signs of stunted growth, premature yellowing, and deformation. Severely infested cones are often completely hollowed out, leading to total seed loss.
Control measures. Integrated pest management involves the removal and destruction of infested cones to reduce local population pressure. In nurseries, well-timed insecticide applications during the egg-laying and early larval stages can provide effective control. Monitoring flight activity using pheromone traps is recommended for precise timing of interventions.
