Description
Systematic position. The pine coneworm moth (Dioryctria mutatella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. As a member of the snout moth group, it has evolved to specialize in infesting various parts of coniferous trees, making it a significant challenge for silviculture and forest health management across its European and Asian range.
Host plants. The primary host for this pest is the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). In some regions, it may infest other pine species or occasionally spruce trees. Its impact is most severe in plantations and seed orchards, where the larvae directly consume the developing cones and internal tissues of young shoots, directly threatening future regeneration.
Biology and life cycle. This species undergoes complete metamorphosis. Adults typically emerge during the summer months, from June to August. Females lay eggs on young cones or near the base of shoots. After hatching, the larvae bore into the plant tissue, creating tunnels and feeding internally. This hidden life cycle makes detection and control efforts significantly more complex for foresters.
Damage and economic impact. Larval feeding causes significant damage, including the premature yellowing and dropping of pine cones. When larvae attack shoots, they disrupt the transport of nutrients, which leads to stunted growth, apical shoot dieback, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections. High levels of infestation can lead to a complete loss of the annual seed crop and long-term tree deformation.
Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for managing Dioryctria mutatella populations. Recommended strategies include:
- Sanitation harvesting, which involves the collection and destruction of infested cones and damaged shoots.
- Monitoring populations using pheromone traps to time the application of biocontrol agents.
- Promoting the presence of natural predators, such as birds and parasitic wasps, within the forest ecosystem.
- Applying systemic insecticides in pine nurseries during the critical period when larvae are first exposed before boring into the plant tissue.
