Pryer's shoot moth

Systematic position: Pryer's shoot moth (Dioryctria pryeri) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. It is a highly specialized pest that predominantly targets coniferous tree species, particularly those within the Pinus genus, causing significant economic and ecological damage to forestry operations and ornamental plantations.

Affected crops: The primary hosts for this insect are various species of pine trees. The moth is well-adapted to coniferous forest ecosystems, where it infests young and pole-stage trees, compromising their structural integrity and overall vigor by damaging critical vegetative tissues.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. Adult females oviposit near buds, on needles, or within bark fissures. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into young shoots or pine cones, feeding on internal tissues and creating galleries. This internal feeding pattern disrupts the plant's vascular system, leading to shoot dieback.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: The damage is caused by the larval stage. When larvae bore into shoots, they often destroy the terminal bud, leading to stem deformation, crooked growth, or the formation of multiple tops in young pines. Resin bleeding is a characteristic symptom at infestation sites. Severe outbreaks can lead to substantial loss of annual growth and can weaken trees, making them susceptible to secondary pests and pathogens.

Control measures: Managing population levels requires consistent forest pathology monitoring to detect infestations early. Key control strategies include:

• Pruning and destroying infested shoots and cones before adult moth emergence.
• Application of microbial insecticides based on Bacillus thuringiensis during the early larval stage.
• Use of contact-stomach systemic insecticides in high-risk areas.
• Silvicultural practices that promote tree health and reduce stress, thereby increasing natural resistance.
