Description
The pine coneworm (Dioryctria rubella) is a significant pest of coniferous trees, classified within the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. This species is primarily known for its impact on the reproductive structures of pine trees, causing substantial losses in seed yield.
The primary hosts of this moth include various species within the Pinus genus. In addition to cones, the larvae are known to infest the terminal shoots of young saplings, causing stunted growth and structural abnormalities that affect the commercial value and vitality of the forest.
The biological cycle of this species typically consists of one generation per year. The larvae overwinter in protective silken cocoons nestled in bark crevices. Upon the arrival of spring and warmer temperatures, they emerge to feed on developing pine cones or the succulent tissues of young shoots.
The primary damage is caused by larvae tunneling into the scales and internal tissues of the cones. This action leads to the abortion of cone development, premature dropping, and destruction of the seeds inside. Shoots that are attacked often wither at the tip, resulting in a characteristic "shepherd's crook" deformation.
