The primary hosts for this insect are trees of the genus Abies (fir), though it may occasionally be found on spruce trees. The larvae develop within the wood, creating tunnels underneath the bark and in the sapwood, which significantly diminishes the structural integrity of the timber and contributes to the physiological decline of the host tree.

The biology of the species is closely linked to the health status of forest stands. Adult beetles are active during the summer months, at which time females oviposit in bark crevices. The larvae feed on phloem and sapwood tissue, gradually boring deeper into the trunk. The life cycle typically spans several years, influenced largely by regional climatic conditions and the availability of suitable host material.

Damage is characterized by distinct entrance holes on the bark and winding larval galleries filled with frass. Large-scale infestations can lead to branch dieback or total tree mortality, leaving the host vulnerable to secondary pests and fungal infections.
