Diplogaster (Diplogaster lheritieri) is a type of nematode classified within the order Rhabditida and the family Diplogastridae. While many members of this family are primarily saprophagous, Diplogaster lheritieri is recognized in agronomy for its capacity to act as a plant pest, especially under conditions of high soil moisture and decaying plant matter.
This pest is primarily found in vegetable crops, causing significant damage in greenhouse environments and intensive farming systems. Key susceptible crops include tomatoes, cucumbers, and potatoes. It often targets weakened or stressed plants, but can rapidly spread to healthy tissues if the environmental conditions are favorable for its development.
The biology of Diplogaster lheritieri is characterized by a rapid reproductive cycle. Nematodes thrive in substrates with high organic content and moisture levels. They progress through several larval stages, with the infective juveniles being highly mobile, allowing them to migrate towards plant roots or stem injuries where they begin their feeding process.
Damage caused by this nematode involves the invasion of plant tissues, which often results in secondary infections by bacteria and fungi. The secretion of enzymes by the nematodes degrades plant cells, leading to localized necrosis, wilting, and systemic collapse of the plant. This loss of tissue integrity significantly impacts crop yield and market quality.
