In modern agronomy, particularly in specialized greenhouse and hydroponic production, these organisms are considered significant biological contaminants. They can colonize irrigation systems and growing media, creating physical barriers that disrupt the health of cultivated plants.

These organisms primarily affect high-value crops grown in controlled environments, such as vegetables in recirculating hydroponic systems. The presence of the pest leads to the suffocation of root systems, as the organism forms a dense layer on substrates and drainage pipes. It is particularly problematic in systems with high levels of dissolved organic matter.

The biology of Discosoma in agricultural systems is driven by its ability to propagate rapidly in moisture-rich environments. They thrive in warm, stagnant water where light penetration promotes the growth of algae, which serve as a foundational layer. Once established, they form colonies that are highly resistant to standard environmental fluctuations, making them difficult to eradicate without specialized intervention.

The damage caused by this pest is primarily indirect but devastating. By coating roots, the organisms inhibit nutrient uptake and create anaerobic pockets that favor the development of root rots (such as Pythium). This results in leaf chlorosis, stunted plant growth, and eventually, the total collapse of the plant's root structure, leading to significant yield loss.

Growers must implement regular cleaning schedules for irrigation lines and ensure that light is completely excluded from nutrient solution reservoirs to prevent colonization.
