Host plants and damage: Disterna species primarily infest weakened broadleaf and coniferous trees. Both adults and larvae can cause severe economic and ecological damage by tunneling into the phloem and xylem of the tree, which severely disrupts the vascular system and leads to crown dieback, branch failure, and, in severe cases, the death of the entire host plant.
