The host range for this species includes various broad-leaved trees. Disterna plumifera typically targets stressed, weakened, or damaged specimens. The larvae penetrate beneath the bark, tunneling into the phloem and cambium layers. Exit holes left by emerging adults further weaken the tree by providing entry points for secondary infections, such as fungi and opportunistic bacteria, which accelerate decay.
