Description
Systematic position and characteristics. The sand longhorn beetle (Dorcadion arenarium) belongs to the Cerambycidae family within the order Coleoptera. This species is characterized by its inability to fly, as these beetles have fused elytra. Consequently, their movement is limited, making infestations localized rather than widespread across vast agricultural regions.
Host crops and damage. This pest primarily targets cereal crops, including wheat, barley, and rye. Both adults and larvae cause significant economic damage. Adults feed on the foliage by chewing the leaf margins, while larvae, which dwell in the soil, feed directly on the root systems, causing severe physiological stress to the host plants.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Dorcadion arenarium is closely tied to soil conditions. Females lay eggs in the topsoil near host plants. The larvae develop underground over one or two years, feeding on roots of grasses and weeds. Pupation also occurs in the soil.
