Dorcaschema wildii
Dorcaschema wildii
Description
Dorcaschema wildii is a species of longhorn beetle belonging to the family Cerambycidae and the order Coleoptera. This insect is primarily recognized as a specialized wood-boring pest that targets woody plants within the Moraceae family, notably mulberry trees (Morus) and various species of fig trees (Ficus).
The host range is centered on healthy and stressed trees of the mentioned genera. The adult beetles are typically active during the growing season, while the larvae are responsible for the primary damage. By boring into the bark and the sapwood of branches, they disrupt the physiological processes of the trees they colonize.
The life cycle of this pest involves several developmental stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are deposited by females into small crevices or intentional cuts on the bark of host plants. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the wood, where they feed and develop for an extended period, creating elaborate galleries that weaken the structural integrity of the wood.
The harmful effects caused by Dorcaschema wildii include branch dieback, yellowing and dropping of leaves, and structural decline of the tree. Severe infestations lead to significant sap flow disruption, making the tree susceptible to secondary attacks by fungi or other wood-destroying pathogens. In horticultural and agricultural settings, this can lead to total tree failure.
Managing this pest requires a combination of strategies:
- Implementing strict sanitation programs to remove and destroy infested wood during the dormant season.
- Regular monitoring of tree trunks and branches for signs of frass and entry holes.
- Targeted application of insecticides to tree trunks during the beetle emergence period to prevent egg-laying.
- Maintaining high tree vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation to help trees naturally withstand minor infestations.
