Dorcatoma

Dorcatoma is a genus of beetles belonging to the Anobiidae family, commonly known as death-watch or spider beetles in broader contexts, but specifically recognized as destructive stored-product pests. These insects are capable of causing significant damage to high-value dry botanical commodities.

Systematically, they are classified under the order Coleoptera. While many species inhabit forests, those in the genus Dorcatoma have adapted to human-built environments, finding optimal conditions in granaries, warehouses, and storage facilities where dried vegetable matter is kept in large quantities.

These beetles primarily damage dried herbs, spices, medical plants, and dried fruits. The larvae are the main destructive stage, as they bore deep, intricate galleries through the plant tissue. This internal feeding makes detection difficult until significant structural damage to the commodity has already occurred.

The biological development follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The lifecycle length is highly dependent on ambient temperature and humidity levels. Under favorable conditions, the pest can undergo multiple generations per year, leading to exponential population growth if not controlled early.

Protection strategies require a rigorous integrated pest management approach. Key practices include monitoring with pheromone traps, maintaining low humidity levels in warehouses, and performing thorough sanitation of storage containers. If an infestation is confirmed, professional fumigation is often necessary to prevent the total loss of the stored product.
