Mezium

Mezium (lat. Mezium) belongs to the family Ptinidae, which is part of the order Coleoptera. These insects are typical stored product pests that specialize in feeding on products of plant and animal origin in storage facilities, grain elevators, and residential buildings.

The pest damages a wide range of crops and food products. The diet of Mezium includes cereal and legume crops, flour, groats, dried fruits and vegetables, as well as products of animal origin, including wool, leather, furs, and insect collections, making it a threat to a broad spectrum of stored items.

The biology and life cycle of Mezium are closely linked to the microclimate conditions within the storage facility. Females lay eggs directly into the food substrate or in cracks nearby. Development consists of the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Larvae lead a concealed lifestyle, burrowing inside the product, which makes early detection difficult during visual inspections of the stocks.

The nature of the damage involves severe contamination of products with excrement, shed skins, and silk webbing produced by the larvae. The products lose their market quality and become unfit for consumption or processing. The high level of harmfulness is due to the cryptic nature of their feeding, where a large portion of the harvest or stocks can be destroyed from within even before the adult beetles emerge.

Protection measures include a complex of organizational and chemical actions:

• Thorough cleaning of storage facilities to remove grain residues and debris.
• Monitoring of humidity and temperature levels in storage areas to create unfavorable conditions for reproduction.
• Implementation of wet and aerosol disinsection of empty warehouses using certified insecticides.
• Sealing of storage areas to prevent re-infestation from the external environment.
