Description

Dorysthenes is a genus of large longhorn beetles (family Cerambycidae, subfamily Prioninae) known for their destructive impact on trees. These insects are classified as serious agricultural pests, particularly in regions where they infest orchards and forest plantations by targeting the root systems of healthy specimens.

The primary host plants include various fruit trees like apples, pears, and citrus, as well as grapevines. Unlike surface-feeding pests, the larvae of Dorysthenes are endophagous, meaning they live and feed inside the roots and the base of the trunk. This internal destruction compromises the plant's structural integrity and its ability to transport sap.

The biological cycle of this beetle is characterized by a long larval period, often spanning several years before the insect emerges as an adult. Adult beetles are nocturnal and active during specific seasons, during which they mate and females deposit eggs in the soil near the base of suitable host plants.

Infestation symptoms are often subtle in the early stages, making early detection difficult. Typical signs include canopy thinning, stunted growth, and sudden wilting of branches. Because the larvae remain protected within the woody tissue or deep underground, the damage is frequently irreversible by the time it becomes visible to the farmer.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize the threat. Key strategies include:

  • Implementing systematic root collar inspections in high-risk zones.
  • Applying soil-incorporated insecticides to target emerging larvae.
  • Removing and destroying heavily infested trees to reduce the local population.
  • Maintaining plant vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation to help trees tolerate minor root damage.
