Dorysthenes hydropicus is a significant wood-boring beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. This species is native to East Asia and is recognized as a major pest of fruit trees, ornamental trees, and bamboo. Due to its cryptic nature, it often goes undetected until significant structural damage has been inflicted upon the root system of host plants.

The host range of this pest primarily includes fruit-bearing species such as apples, pears, peaches, and citrus, as well as various bamboo species. By attacking the underground parts of the plant, the larvae cause direct damage to the vascular system. This interference prevents the tree from transporting nutrients and water, which is essential for healthy development and fruit production.

The life cycle of the beetle is characterized by a prolonged larval stage, which typically spans several years. Female beetles deposit eggs in the soil near the base of susceptible trees. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the roots, where they excavate extensive feeding galleries. This deep-tissue consumption weakens the root structure significantly and makes the tree vulnerable to secondary infections or environmental stress.

The damage caused by Dorysthenes hydropicus is manifested in progressive decline, reduced annual growth, and, in severe cases, the eventual death of the tree. Growers often observe canopy thinning, premature yellowing of leaves, and an overall loss of vigor. Since the larvae operate entirely underground, external signs are often delayed until the infestation has reached a critical stage.
