Click beetle

The Click beetle (Drasterius elegans) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Elateridae family, order Coleoptera. This species is widely recognized for its destructive larval stage, commonly referred to as wireworms, which inhabit the soil and cause severe damage to the root systems and seeds of various economically important plants across temperate regions.

The life cycle of Drasterius elegans involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The beetles typically emerge in the spring to mate and lay eggs in moist, organic-rich soils. The larvae develop over several years, moving vertically through the soil profile in response to moisture and temperature, which makes them resilient to fluctuating environmental conditions and field treatments.

This pest is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide array of crops. The most affected plant categories include:

• Cereal crops (wheat, barley, maize).
• Industrial crops (sunflower, sugar beet).
• Vegetable crops and potatoes.
• Forage and leguminous plants.

Damage occurs primarily underground. Larvae consume germinating seeds and the stems of young seedlings, often resulting in significant plant stand reduction and the need for reseeding. In more mature plants, wireworms bore into roots, tubers, and bulbs, causing stunted growth and creating entry points for secondary fungal and bacterial pathogens that further degrade crop quality.

Management strategies require a combination of preventative and curative methods. Cultural practices, such as intensive tillage to expose larvae to natural predators, proper crop rotation, and precise weed control, are essential for managing population density. In fields with historically high wireworm populations, the use of insecticidal seed treatments or in-furrow soil applications during planting is often necessary to ensure successful crop establishment.
